A magnificent hanging ornament exhibition, approximately 3 meters high, 2.4 meters wide, and 6.8 meters deep, will be created using about 5,000 exquisitely hand-stitched antique silk ornaments. This elegant installation reflects heartfelt prayers for the health, happiness, and well-being of children, offering visitors an immersive experience of Japanese traditional culture and craftsmanship.
The tradition of Tsurushi-kazari hanging ornaments is said to have originated during the Edo period (1603–1868). Each ornament is rich in symbolism, expressing wishes passed down through generations: flowers represent beauty and grace; crawling infant dolls symbolize the strength to grow, stand, and walk firmly; sparrows convey hopes for abundant food and good health; and monkeys signify the ability to ward off misfortune. In addition, the horse, the zodiac symbol of 2026, represents vitality, strength, and a future filled with positive momentum. All hanging ornaments have been meticulously hand-stitched, one by one, from precious genuine antique silk kimono fabrics by renowned quilt artist Mitsuyo Matsuo together with approximately 60 members of the Himawari Group, preserving the warmth and authenticity of traditional handcraft.
Displayed at the center of the exhibition is a tiered arrangement of traditional “Mataro Ningyō” kimekomi wooden dolls, created by master artisans officially certified by Kamigamo Shrine as the sole authentic inheritors of this historic craft.
These dolls are renowned for their highly intricate technique, in which fine grooves are carved into the wooden bodies to delicately insert and secure the edges of silk costumes. The exhibition will be further enhanced by refined seasonal décor throughout the hotel, offering guests a luxury cultural experience in Tokyo that celebrates Japanese artistry, heritage, and hospitality.
