Hina-Matsuri Girls’ Doll Festival Art Exhibition

Every year, through February and March, Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo celebrates the Hina-Matsuri festival, a time when families pray for the health and growth of their children. Thousands of handmade hanging silk doll which are said to trap evil spirits and bring girls good luck are showcased. Also, this year’s exhibition will newly display Japan’s traditional craft of wooden mosaic art, which have also been created to reflect the prayers for happiness of children. In addition, Japanese flower arrangement artist Tenkei Nomura will create flower arrangements befitting the spring peach tree flower season to be displayed on the third floor main lobby, and the second floor restaurant area including at the entrance to the “Kagari” Japanese cuisine restaurant for all guests to enjoy.

Hanging Art Ornaments and Tiered Stand of Dolls, Highlighted with Beautiful Flowers

The main lobby, and other locations around the hotel, will showcase more than 5,500 handmade hanging silk dolls which symbolically reflect the hopes for health and happiness of children. For example, the decorations created for this exhibition have various symbolic meaning such as flowers for “beauty”, “Mari” balls for “energetic life”, goldfish as talismans to “ward off evil”, sparrows for “healthy sustenance”.

The World of “Hina” Reflected in Wooden Crafts

Traditional crafted arts of Kanagawa Prefecture that reflect prayers for happiness of children and convey a sense of the seasons.
・“Hakone Mosaic Wood Crafts” Featuring Mosaic Wood Crafts in Various Wood Colors and Grains
Mosaic wood crafts, just like hanging decorative ornaments, are created in reflection of the prayers for all children to grow up healthy and happy.

・“Odawara Lacquerware” - Handmade Lacquerware Highlighting the Beauty of the Wood Grain
Trays, bowls and plates used in daily lives and made from natural wood with the added elegance of traditional Japanese lacquer will be displayed. Large plates decorated with plum blossoms will also be on display.

・“Kamakura Carvings” – Lacquer Art that Has Transcended 800 Years of History and Survives in the Modern Day
“Odairi-Sama Moyo” (Imperial Palace pattern) wall hanging decorations will be displayed.
